Four US states seek contractor for hydrogen hub proposal

The Wyoming Energy Authority has issued a request for proposals (RfP) for a prime contractor for the Western Inter-States Hydrogen Hub, a proposed regional clean hydrogen hub that four states have teamed up to develop.

The four states, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, in February signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to coordinate and develop the hub, looking to compete for part of the USD 8 billion (EUR 7.8bn) earmarked in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for the creation of at least four regional hydrogen hubs.

The prime contractor will support the submission of an application for funding to the Department of Energy (DoE) and, if successful, it will manage the implementation of the project.

In a press release on Thursday, Colorado governor Jared Polis said: “Our administration is well on our way toward achieving 100% renewable energy by 2040 so we are proud to be leading this group of western states to advance hydrogen power.”

According to the announcement, the four states are well placed to become hydrogen hubs given their wind, solar and biomass resources, oil and natural gas industry, energy transportation infrastructure, as well as carbon management infrastructure with favourable geologies and regulatory structures.
