Australia’s Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) is funding an initiative by California-based PsiQuantum that seeks to explore how quantum computing solutions could be used to produce green hydrogen at a lower cost.
The green energy business of mining giant Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) said on Thursday it has become a foundational member of the Qlimate Initiative of its Silicon Valley partner. The specific initiative aims to support innovation in the global decarbonisation process through superfast computer technology.
FFI and Qlimate’s collaboration will be focused on quantum solutions in the green hydrogen sector. The Aussie firm expects its participation to help create a broader strategy for developing computing algorithms that solve bottlenecks in the modelling of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology and pulse electrolysis.
“Through this joint effort, we expect to improve the efficiency of green hydrogen electrolysis and significantly decrease production costs, helping build a viable green hydrogen economy,” said Jeremy O’Brien, co-founder and CEO of PsiQuantum.
Perth-based FFI aims to reach an annual green hydrogen production of 15 million tonnes by 2030 and 50 million tonnes by 2040.
