Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has formed a partnership with blade maker LM Wind Power, part of rival turbine manufacturer GE Renewable Energy, for blade production in Brazil.
Vestas on Friday announced a multi-year supply agreement with LM Wind for the production of V150-4.2 MW blades mainly for the Brazilian market with the flexibility to export if applicable. The blades will be produced in LM Wind’s factory in Ipojuca, in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, starting in the second half of 2022.
“This partnership is a good example of how we develop and expand the wind energy supply chain to drive the needed scale of renewables by increasing the use of standardised components and shared manufacturing operations between OEMs [original equipment manufacturers], thereby adopting a similar approach to the automotive industry,” said Tommy Rahbek Nielsen, Vestas executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Dorte Kamper, LM Wind vice president of sales and marketing, added that cooperation across the value chain is critical for the wind industry to sustain a healthy growth.
Vestas said it has secured more than 18 GW in orders for the V150-4.2 MW and V150-4.5 MW wind turbines, including over 6.5 GW in Brazil and 700 MW in other Latin American markets. The wind turbines are manufactured in Brazil under the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) FINAME rules.
