Quinbrook to build 2-GWh battery at data storage campus in Queensland

Renewables infrastructure investor Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners is proposing to install a 2,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) as part of a plan to set up a large data storage complex near Brisbane, Queensland.

The huge data storage facility and battery storage infrastructure will be built as part of the Supernode project that calls for an overall investment of AUD 2.5 billion (USD 1.7bn/EUR 1.67bn), Quinbrook said on Friday.

The company has already submitted a “code assessable” planning application for the BESS proposal, while the Queensland government separately said that the project has been awarded council planning approval and consent from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).

The developer’s plan is to start building the battery storage infrastructure in the middle of next year. Once in operation, it will support the data centre’s operations and provide dispatchable power to the grid to firm additional renewables capacity. Furthermore, it is expected to help reduce the risk of power outages in the Aussie state.

According to Quinbook, the project site, located adjacent to the South Pine substation at Brendale, offers “unparalleled power supply reliability.”

The infrastructure investor noted it has, meanwhile, started a marketing campaign for Supernode to prospective data centre operators. The campus is planned to house four "hyperscale" data centres.
