Indian JV to install 250 MW/500 MWh of battery storage in Assam

Indian firms ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited (OTPC) and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) have joined forces to install up to 250 MW/500 MWh battery energy storage capacity in the northeastern state of Assam.

The companies last week unveiled a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will pave the way for the creation of a joint venture (JV) for the project. The plan calls for an overall investment of INR 20 billion (USD 264.1m/EUR 227.1m).

The proposed capacity will be deployed in phases.

According to the two firms, the project will enhance the power availability in Assam during peak load periods and help improve grid reliability. “The energy storage project will bring in multiple avenues of employment, boost local businesses, improve utilization of green energy, carbon emission reduction and overall socio-economic development in Assam,” said OTPC’s managing director Sanil C Namboodiripad.

OTPC is a joint business of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), natural gas processor and distributor GAIL India, the government of Tripura and India Infrastructure Fund-II.
