The government of Romania is seeking to assess the interest of renewable energy developers in upcoming tenders for renewable power capacity, official documents show.
The Ministry of Energy on Wednesday opened a call for expressions of interest and will await submissions by December 30, 2022. The proposed auctions are planned to be carried out as part of the country’s contract-for-difference (CfD) support mechanism that awards winners 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).
The first CfD auction is planned to be held in 2023, the Ministry said. Local news provider Energynomics reported last week that up to 750 MW of solar and 750 MW of wind will be on offer, with the competition planned to be launched before the end of June. Eligible to bid will be proposals of at least 5 MW in size.
Romania aims to reach at least a 34% share of renewables in total power production by 2030. The target was upgraded earlier this year from the previous 30%. In March, Romania launched a tender for 950 MW of fresh capacity, allocating a budget of EUR 457.7 million (USD 480.6m).
At the end of 2021, the country had 11 GW of renewable power plants in operation, representing 56.5% of its total power mix. The total includes 6.7 GW of hydropower, 3 GW of wind and 1.4 GW of solar, according to data by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
