Dutch firms plan renewables-powered charging hub for heavy equipment & lorries

A team of Dutch companies said last week they will build the world's first public fast-charging plaza for heavy construction equipment and lorries, which will be powered by renewable energy.

The project, called WattHub, is a partnership between marine contractor Van Oord, construction sector players Dura Vermeer and Ploegam, and wind farm company Betuwewind, which will supply the renewable electricity.

The project is located along the A15 motorway in the Netherlands, surrounded by wind turbines and solar panels. It will feature 39 charging stations and a charging capacity of up to 600 kW per charging point.

The companies plan to start preparatory work in February and bring the facility into operation by the end of April.

The reason for the construction of a fast-charging plaza running on green energy is a plan to make the Tiel-Waardenburg dyke reinforcement project, executed by Van Oord, Dura Vermeer and Ploegam, a zero-emissions project.

As the capacity of the charging plaza exceeds the project’s needs, local businesses and suppliers will have the opportunity to invest in sustainable equipment to electrify their fleets, says the announcement.
