Consortium eyeing Norwegian floating wind zone to partner with Aker Solutions

A consortium made up of Mainstream Renewable Power, which is majority-owned by Aker Horizons, Ocean Winds and Statkraft will partner with Aker Solutions on floating offshore wind at the Utsira Nord area in Norway.

The parties have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to together develop sustainable and cost-efficient technologies including design, construction, fabrication and installation initiatives, according to an announcement today.

The consortium has been formed to bid to develop floating wind power at the Utsira Nord license area. Norway is preparing to award the Utsira Nord and the first phase of Sorlige Nordsjo II areas in 2023 and this week released a proposed framework for the process. Utsira Nord, off the coast of Haugesund in western Norway, will be divided into three sites expected to accommodate facilities of 500 MW each.

The three-member consortium was announced in 2021 as a partnership between Norwegian companies Aker Offshore Wind and Statkraft and Ocean Winds, which is a joint venture between EDP Renewables (EDPR) and Engie.

According to Tove Roskaft, head of Offshore Wind at Mainstream, “bringing together the strengths from across the Aker group, along with those of our partners Ocean Winds and Statkraft, will position Utsira Nord at the forefront of the floating wind industry globally, while bringing broad benefits to Norway through new jobs, new technology and new green energy."

Aker Solutions is a provider of products and services to the energy industry with yards in Norway and a network of suppliers and subcontractors.
